Cheltenham Civic Society

Promoting good design in a historic environment

Planning Forum

The Civic Society’s Planning Forum is consulted by the Cheltenham Borough Council on planning applications that have been submitted together with proposals regarding alterations to road layouts, signposting, the management of trees and other matters related to the urban design of our town.  It also submits comments on draft planning policy documents, Conservation Area proposals and the listing of buildings of architectural or historic interest.

Increasingly, we are being consulted by developers prior to the submission of a planning application. This is welcomed, as it provides an opportunity to influence the progress of a scheme at an early stage in its evolution and offer support to proposals that are considered to be of a high standard.

The Planning Forum meets every two weeks to review and offer constructive comment on current applications of civic interest, and feel that many schemes are improved in the light of our input.

Our aim is to stiffen the resolve of our Council to resist the pressure of developers, giving the very clear message that any projects within the Borough must be carefully considered and designed to the highest standards.

Minutes of the Planning Forum meetings are available free to members by email.
